Fingerprints and the residence card — when you give them and how long the card takes afterwards

For many foreigners, giving fingerprints is the most misleading moment of the whole procedure — it looks like the finale, but it is often just the beginning. How long you will wait for the card "after fingerprints" depends entirely on the stage at which they were taken. The whole procedure is covered in our guide residence card in Warsaw.

Why the office takes fingerprints

Fingerprints are part of the biometric data stored in the residence card — without them the card physically cannot be produced. They are taken from every applicant except children under 6. The fingerprint itself is no assessment of your case: it is a technical step, like a photo or a signature.

When fingerprints are taken — MOS changed the order

Since 27 April 2026 the residence permit application is filed electronically via the MOS system — we describe how it works in the article residence card application in MOS. After filing, the office summons you to a visit where you present original documents and give your fingerprints. Only this visit formally "closes" the application — and only then does the case start moving.

Do fingerprints mean the decision will be positive

No — and this is the most common myth. Only after taking fingerprints does the office analyse the documents, request opinions from the services (Border Guard, Police, ABW) and verify the residence basis. Refusals happen many months after fingerprints — and conversely, gaps in the file can stall a case right after biometrics.

How long the card takes after fingerprints

Everything depends on when the fingerprints were taken:

• fingerprints at the start of the case — this is the beginning of the proceedings; until the decision at the Masovian Voivodeship Office there are usually still 6–12 months,
• fingerprints or their completion after a positive decision — the card goes into production; after the PLN 100 fee is booked, collection usually within 2–4 weeks.

Silence after fingerprints — what to do

If months have passed since biometrics and the case stands still, the office is almost certainly exceeding the statutory deadlines. The tool that really works is the ponaglenie (urging letter), followed by a complaint about inactivity to the administrative court. These letters must be firmly grounded in the case file — a template copied "from the internet" gets dismissed and weakens your position. That is why they should be drafted by a representative who knows the file.

Collecting the residence card

The office informs you when the card is ready — the status is also visible in MOS. The card is collected in person, with your travel document: at collection the officer verifies your fingerprints against those stored in the card, so a representative cannot collect it for you. A card for a child under 13 is collected by a parent or guardian.
